Default Shifter Button

The shifter button is slow to pop up when I put it in park which means I can't get the key out. I tried a little WD 40 to no avail. Any ideas?

On automatics, there is a cable that connects the steering column to the shifter. This cable could be sticking or the mechanism that is in the column is sticking or just the cable or the mechanicals at the base of the shifter is binding below the shift boot. At the bottom of the column you can see the hard cable connecting to the column. I haven't disconnected one yet but you could probably do it there and check to see if disconnecting it eliminates the binding. If you disconnect it and the binding is eliminated, then the problem is probably in the column. If it's still binding, then the column is probably ok. Removing the shifter bezel so you can look at the shifter cable and the mechanical connection at the shifter may be next. It may just need some lube. If you disconnect the cable at the shifter and the problem goes away, it's probably the cable. If the problem is still there, then the shifter is suspect. Could be just some gunk in the shaft of the shifter that is not allowing the plunger rod to travel up and down freely. I don't know if you just tried to spray some WD40 down and around the shifter button, but that won't do. If you pull up on the shifter button it should come off. You'll see the pluger rod going down the outer shifter shaft. You might want to spray some lube down in between the two pieces. The order which you want to troubleshoot this is up to you. Depending on what year you have may determine where to start. You might try removing the button first and lubricate it there first. Keep in mind that everything has to reconnected otherwise the steering wheel lock won't release. Whatever you do, don't leave it disconnected and drive it. I'm sure others will post, and with similar or other suggestions.

It sounds like the mechanism in the shifter assy. is dirty or the return spring is weak.

Pull the console plate and clean & lube the flat rod that moves up/down with the button and the lower end that engages the notches in the shift gate.
