At times I share the same point of view you do but, how would you feel if you lost all of your freedoms at a certain age? He make a mistake which we all do and his insurance will pay to fix it. Now.. if he has a history of accidents or another accident soon then he should be retested for reflexes and vision.
I would hate to think that after 80 years of life as a good citizen and possibly a good driving record that some new law banning people my age from driving would take it all away.

All true, however, his insurance company will fix it, in turn my rates will go up. They have to when accidents happen.
I can't believe that I will support a government program. However, there are shuttles around here that take old people to and from the supermarket, mall, etc. I am not a gymnist, I have my phisical limitations. If those limitations somehow endanger socieity, therefore I should be restricted from such actions.
What if that were my daughter crossing an intersection when this guys lack of reflexes served up another disaster.
I have a better idea, in this case, assume all people over a selected age, I think 78 is about it. Should be tested annually. Look, they don't work, they have all the free time in the world, let them get tested.
My grandmother still drives and she's in her 80s. Does 75 MPH down the Garden State. If she were tested, she'd pass.
Lastly, don't confuse mobility with freedom. Freedom is the ability to not be punnished for your thoughts, not the ability to get a loaf of bread at will.

Just my .02
Gotcha: 80 years of being a good person, and all of a sudden you are a criminal.

Not a criminal, no one is saying put them in jail and throw away the key. We are saying there are some who should be tested on the regular basis to protect society.
Freedom of speech and religion is a right. Driving isn't.
I'm glad you and your son are okay...that's the most important thing. I hope the repair on your Vette goes well.
Accidents happen with the old and young at the wheel. A friend of mine here got plowed into by a 21 year old driver in a BMW. His Suburban and the BMW was totaled. The guy in the Bimmer said he was trying to answer his cell phone and didn't see the traffic was stopped.
You are one of the lucky ones, if there is such a thing in this case, there is no doubt the shop is going to do great work and get it all covered by insurance. Especially important because that is a rare color and beautiful one too.
