Default How do you remove powder coating?

I just got a K&N triple air intake, referred to as the claw for my 96 Corvette for Christmas.

The metal on the 3 intake tubes is powder coated. I need to remove the powder coating so that I can get this chromed.

Today, I tried removing the powder coating with carb cleaner as one suggested but the carb cleaner didn't budge the powder coating.

I was told that I can't sand blast it as is it will leave pits in the metal and then the chrome finish won't be smooth. Is this true?

Any other suggestions on how to get the powder coating off?

Anyone know where I can send this to get the powder coating off and get it chromed?

Thanks,
JJ

Blasting media is available from very coarse, to very fine. If you choose to blast it, start with the coarser then work to fine. It will polish out to accept the Chome just fine. Or you could go to Home Depot and pick up some aircraft stripper and see if that will get through the powder coating. I've been told powder coating will strip off just like paint, but it's just a bit more stuborn. We do a lot of paint stripping in my shop, but I've never personally tried it on a powder coated object.

Default Torch

The Only Times I've Removed Powder Coating I Had To Singe It With A Torch And Then Sand Blast It. Very Time Consuming And Arduous. I Agree With The Guy That Said Sell It And Buy The One You Want.

I have removed powder coating several times with gel type paint remover...alittle messy but your part will come out perfect. Just follow the directions and take your time.

Did some powder coating years ago, epoxy type and we stripped it with an industrial, solvent type paint stripper. It had a lot of methylene chloride solvent in it-I think that's what did the most work. Do it with plenty of ventilation.

I used to do powder coating for industrail machinery and when we had to re-do a part we used an acid based stripper that would if left to long eat the metal part.

Ditzler Aircraft Stripper might work I dunno.
Be very careful with it though it is very toxic and can cause serious eye damage. It is nuteralized with pain water.

Got a nasty oil stain in your driveway the stripper will remove it.
Wear a face mask and eye protection.

Default try this to strip the coating

before you go out and pay a small fortune for exotic striping material take a tour of the wifes kitchen and get a can of oven clean ( easy-off) or whatever its called dont use the no fume, get the nastiest smelling stuff you can find, spray it on heavy and let it sit, when dry use damp sponge to remove, hit with second heavy coat and it should be off, i have striped motoercycle frames this way in the past with zero problems and leaves a nice smooth surface ready for the buffing wheel and compounds.

hey worse case if it dont work you will have super clean parts and only be out 5 bucks.

We use Aircraft stripper that you buy at Wal-mart. Just be sure the part is at room temp and follow the directions on the can. Only brush in one direction, not back and forth. It may take a couple of times to get it clean, but it does work.

you can sand blast it or go to a machine shop of some type and they will blast it in a media cabinet. This will not harn your claw for the chrome finish. BUT pull out that wallet and be prepared to to hear about the $$$$$$ that they will charge you to chrome that small part. My grill for my 32' was $1550 but I had shopped forever to find the right person for the job. I had been quoted $525 to $1800. I have had dozens of parts chromed and have never had an inexpensive job satisfy me.
