I probably already no the answer to my question but like a putz im going to ask it anyway. How do I tell what size Differential I have in my 86' 4+3? I assume its in my VIN # somewhere but dont no how to find out. Can anyone help me? If it is in my VIN let me no and I will post the number. I am going to have access to a friend of mines lift for a week or so while he's off on vaca, so I planned on getting under the vette and changing the throw-out baring and replacing the clutch and flywheel. While im at it I'd like to replace the rearend gears while im at it. So need to no what I have and then decide what I need. Thanks for the input. While your at it any recommendations on gears would be appreciated. Most of my driving is light to light with the normal highway driving.
You have a D44, but without RPO info, cant help you on the gear ratio you have. It will prob take you longer than you think to switch the ring and pinion, but someone who has done it can explain.

I used to have an 86 and I think the RPO codes are listed under the center console lid on a sticker. If it has G92 then you have the Performance Axle ratio (3.07:1) of which there were 4,879 built. Since there were 6,835 MM4 4-Speed Manual Transmission cars build it apprears that not all manual equipped cars had the G92. This is as quoted in Mike Antonick's book "Cor-Vette Specs 1984 - 1996" Under the Axle Ratios section for this year it says there was a 2.59:1, a 2.73:1, a 3.07:1 and all of these had a 7.875" ring gear outside diameter. Also listed is a 3.07:1 8.5" ring gear outside diameter (manual transmission).
