I have a black 1996 Coupe (LT1) and I'm attempting to change the spark plugs. I have 7 of them replaced but the right aft plug (passenger side, closest to the firewall) is out but I can't get the new plug in. I've removed the wheel, inner wheel well cover, moved the fuel lines. I can see the "hole" but can't get the spark plug started. I also tried fuel line on the end trick mentioned in another post to no avail. I've stopped because frustration set in and I don't want to damage anything. HELP !!! JS
Well you did the right thing to walk away when frustration got too high, turns me on that one.
Anyway, slip a short piece of rubber tubing over the spark plug insulator. It will give you a little "handle" to get the plug started and can be easily removed to get the socket onto it.
Here's a tip for getting this last plug out: I use a piece of 1/2" square tubing, about 3/4" long in the top of my spark plug socket. Then I can use a 1/2" open end wrench on the short stub sticking out from the top of the socket. I find that a piece of rubber hose, about a foot long, pushed onto the top of the new plug works well. Just twist the hose as you guide the new plug into position. (This hose trick works good on DOHC and Hemi engines, too)
Thanks for the additional information. It's amazing what a good nights sleep and a fresh attitude can do for car maintenance. This was my first post, I'm usually a "reader" and enjoy all of the information. I hope to post some pixs later. Again, Thanks.....JSIII
Had the same problem on mine with that plug. It took longer to get that one than to do all of the other 7. After getting more than irrate, I took a one hour break and went back at it with a rubber tube attached to the plug to get it started. That did the trick. I don't remember having to take anything off on that side to get at the plug. I did it from the top.
