Pull the motor out separately. Keep an eye out, as there are quite a few pieces (lines, wires) secured to various lower portions of the motor. Take your time and take notes. Some pics and labeling will help. Have fun!
I may be wrong but I think you have to remove the hood if you pull them together. If seperated the engine can be pulled from the side and the trans from underneath. Pulling the hood off,to me anyway, is a bigger job than pulling the engine.

I just had the engine and tranny out of my 89 a few months ago and I pulled the tranny first then the engine with a cherry picker the motor comes out with out taking the hood off the full exhaust system also has to come off but I have a 6speed tranny!
With auto trans you can leave the tranny in just unbolt it and put blocking under it
The headers do not fit pulling or installing engine (just put on for pic.)
headers are installed after engine is in car!
