You can change the bulbs without removing the cluster
All you'll need to do is take the plastic bezel off the front.
There are covers that pop off the front of the dash cluster one over each of the bulbs... that allows you access to the cluster's lighting.
Some people have claimed those bulbs are expensive to replace... I got them for 50 cents a piece at the local dealership, so I don't understand why they say that...
also, I believe there is a tech tip about how to do this... you may wanna look there.

Thanks. If it turns out there's a loose connection (not in the bulb itself) would you guess it would be in the socket or is there a chance I might have to remove the cluster anyway?
I ordered the bulbs and sockets from mid-america when i did my former 87' for me it was easier to replace them with the cluster out of the car, was not much involved at all

The socket would be a good guess. But it could be a poor solder joint or connection somewhere on the cluster boards (there are two in the cluster). In either case, you'd have to take the cluster out to check those.
It's not too much work getting the cluster out of the car, and once you do (as long as you take your time) the cluster itself is easy to disassemble if you want to get at the sockets.
