Default Camera mount options

Other than the cross brace or a complete roll cage, what kind of camera mounting solutions are there for C4's.

I don't really need the cross bar for safety / stiffness, it would just be in my way most of the time.

I've used the helmet camera for my motorcycle (mounted on the bike) and for bicycling (on my helmet) and it works very well. I have plans to try it out on the Corvette this Summer. It's lightweight and uses a very sticky Velcro to mount. You can put it someplace where it catches part of the car or just the road. I suppose you could put it someplace inside the car, too, if that's what you're after. It also comes with a microphone which can be mounted someplace different from the camera. This is good since the camera is often out in the wind.

don't know if you have a coupe but you might try where the top bolts down if you do.

Hey Nathan...I know you are a handy guy, so I'll give you my solution.

Used a product called "Ram Mounts" http://www.ram-mount.com/ and the only bolt in the rear of the car, the bolt that holds the targa-top storage bracket.

Basically, there is 1 bolt with 1 nut under that plastic cover, so I used some steel an did a very crude, but functional L just short enough to hide under the cover.

Then I used a ball mount from RAM, cut a small notch in the plastic, and mounted the ball to the L and put the cover over all of it...so you only see a ball sticking out of the plastic cover.

This is the RAM mount I use. http://www.ram-mount.com/drawings/rama101.jpg

One side is permanently mounted to the car, and the ball mount on the other side of the locking arm is mounted to the camera.

Now all my video is from the passenger side, but you still get good video from there. Drag racing the camera doesn't shake at all...but I've been on a couple of tracks in which the surface was rough and it shook the camera...so I used a little foam and pressed the camera against the pillar to keep it from shaking.

You'll find the RAM mounts incredibly strong, and really easy to use. I can mount the camera in about 20 seconds, and pull it out in about 5.

I'd show you pics, but the car is in storage sleeping for the winter. If you have any questions, shoot me a note.

Oh...here's a video using the mount. All in-car shots are using this setup.

Why does the phrase, "Duct tape the damned thing to the dash", keep running through my head?

Nathan, look for Warren S he made a bracket that attaches where the rearview mirror is. I look for the email he sent me on it and forward it to you.

He had a write up on it somewhere, but the pics should definitely help out.

I taped it to my passenger side head rest last time! That's what I'm trying to avoid.

That would probably work, but not with the dimensions given. My camera is much bigger than that, being a true video camera instead of a still camera with some video capability.

I made one out of some scrap wood. It has a pessure fit between the plastic rigde behind the b pillar and the plastic groove behind. It works great at the strip and the road course. Painted it with black marbleized paint from the deopt (paint was the most expensive part at $8). I can shoot you some pics, I don't have a host to post them here currently...

You can adjust the measurements accordingly.

Naturally. I'd draw the whole thing up on the computer first. In fact I might could even rapid prototype a plastic mock up.

C4DC, yes please send me some pictures of your solution. Nathan.Plemons@wku.edu

Arisa also used a regular camera tripod in his. He put two of the legs behind the seats and the third in the hatch. I don't recall how he secured it, but it seemed to work for him. He also ran a microphone to the exhaust to get maximum sound(or noise).

Default Nathan....

Just installed a "Harness bar" the type from Arizona speed & marine.
It installs with the stock equipment and used for racing harnesses, camera mount and fire extinguisher. Got mine used and love it. It also firms up the ride (reduces flex).

Same here it works great, real good for Auto-X races.
