Default 85 needs What style headers?

I'm not familair with exhaust at all, but I do want to get my headers to a show polished look-but they have the smog rails on top. I'd rather not cut them off-rather sell them and purchase another set-either polished or have them ceramic coated. My car is an 85, what style headers should I look for? And is ceramic a better option for them than a polished look? thanks

Hi.
I have an 85 as well. I have the TPIS headers ceramic coated and I am very satified with them. They have the siver type of coating and that does not dissipate as much heat as the coloured coatings. I have also the cast iron heads and the sparkplugs are not a problem. I use the rapidfires. The polished headers are very nice to look at in the beginning , but very soon they becomes blue due to the heat and the engine room is also heated up more than with the ceramic coating. I was quite astnished about how low the temp was having the TPIS headers as I saw my friends car had problems with the heat. The headers were quite easy to install using the instructions on TPIS web site.
Good luck.

Well I am having a BIG problem with the heat under the hood, I dressed up alot of areas under the hood and used yellow condulant wire loom around alot of wiring, and noticed alot of it melted around the engine--I just figured Any style header/exhaust manifold would put out enough heat to damage plastic wire loom. Were do I get a set of tpis headers for my car? thanks

If performance is an issue, you will want headers with 1 5/8ths" primary tubes. The ceramic coating should be a BIG help in reducing under hood temps, especially if they are coated both inside and out. I'm not sure how to keep the near chrome finish looking new.

RACE ON!!!

Hedman Hedder 68440... $135 from summit racing... You can get them ceremic coated from Jet Hot (or another company for about $200).

Then You'll have the headers you want for under $400, and they are the right size for you application. As opposed to Hookers.

I recently installed the Hooker ceramic coated super competition 2149's and am pleased. $549 at summit racing. The 2149's retain the EGR, the 2151's delete the EGR.

The Hookers are 1 3/4" tubes, plus, as good as they look, they're only coated on the outside. Therefore, price aside, the Hookers are not Chillcat's best choice. Buy the way, if one starts to do some price checking, the 2151 Hooker headers have NO ceramic coating. One must order the 2151-1 to get the cermaic coated (on the outside, only) 2151 headers.

RACE ON!!!

Ok, I'm going to order a set of hedman headers from summit for 325/plus shipping and those are ceramiccoated too...anybody dissagree or are those a good set. What is the difference between hooker and hedman--the guy on the phone said it is just a name brand difference....

First, I think you have made a reasonable choice. Especially if those headers are coated both inside and out. Some people on this forum don't care for Hedman quality, others have them and love them. Some people seem to look down their noses at Hedman because they don't cost enough.

I'm not sure if they just started this or what but I specificly asked if they were coated inside and out and Summit said yes. Upon arrival and inspection they were definetly coated inside as far as the eye could see with a fashlight. Even down the EGR pipe. So I dunno.
The 2149's are the way to go if someone wants to retain the EGR for emmission purposes IMO.

I wasn't saying it would be Chillcats best choice. Sounds like he's after a less expensive header and has made a decision already anyway. Just throwing another option on the table and that I was pleased.

I checked out Hedman's web site. I see three sets that you could be interested in. The 68440, 68446, and the 68448. The 68446 is the coated version of the 68440. Summit sells the 68440 for $135.88; the 68446 for $325.88; and the 68448, Elite series, for $336.99. Summit indicates it can ship either the 68440 or the 68446 on Monday. The Elites, 68448, they say, would ship by 2/28.

I could find no reference as to whether the coating was inside and out, or outside only. You might want to check with Jet Hot or HPC. Some coating companies buy plain headers, coat them, and keep them in stock for sale. HPC is my personal favorite coating co. If you prefer not to wait for the Elites, you can save $190.00 by ordering the 68440 headers and sending them off to HPC for a super quality coating. You can check out HPC, HERE. Good luck and...
