Default air box/switch removal

Are there any tech or how-to articles on how to remove the air box?
It sure seems to be alot of plumbing and wires----------

Default air pump

this is the selinoid for the air pump---------
it appears to have two parts on the passenger side of the engine, one near the AC unit and one closer to being under the intake tube.
Does all of this get removed?

May be slightly different on your '86.

I traced the air hoses back to the solenoid on mine. It is located next to the A/C compressor and has two electrical plugs in it. The hose from the drivers side manifold runs into an aluminum tube and routes under the alternator and air pump along the front of the block to the heads.

The passenger side was just a rubber hose on mine from the manifold to the solenoid.

There is also another hard line that runs down vertically from the solenoid and is the air intake or exhaust for when the solenoid is not calling for the air to be diverted to the manifolds. To remove this hard line and the one that runs to the drivers manifold, you will have to remove a nut from the stud on the water pump. I was unable to remove the tube that runs to the drivers side withot breaking it, be careful of the coolant temp sensor in the intake manifold when you are wiggling this pipe around. The vertical pipe just pulled out once I removed it from the stud.

There is also another rubber hose that runs to the passenger manifold and connects to a hard line down next to the manifold, the hard line runs to the main cat.

Just remove all this stuff and tape up the electrical connectors and place them out of the way. No codes no troubles.

You may also want to remove the air pump from the engine and remove the fins from inside the pump. The rear housing on the pump comes off and the fins are made of phenolic, so you can just crack pieces off with a pair of pliers and shake them out. I also lubed up the bearings while I had it apart, they were pretty dry. Now in effect the air pump is an idler pulley until I get an eliminator kit.

If I remove all the tubing etc, is there anything that goes into the engine I will have cap off?
Thanks

Are you putting headres on without the air tubes? If you are keeping factroy manifolds, or headers with smog provisions, you will need two 1/2" NPT pipe caps from the hardware store to cap off the connections.

It you are deleting the smog provisions from the manifolds/headers then you will not have anything running into the motor to cap off. Just remove all that stuff and tape up the wires out of the way.

Running aftermarket headers with no smog provisions.
