It should cause no problems at all..just good results! I have had no cats at all on my '91 L98 for 5 or more years, and I now have 160,000 miles on her...no pinging, no problems, no codes at all. Just a wonderful sound, more power, and a happy grin on my face! She sounds SO much better, and you don't have to worry about excessive heat build-up like you do with the cats. I have received so many compliments about how sweet my Vette sounds, many say it sounds better than any V8 they have heard in years (when I pass them)... In all seriousness, dump them all if you can...it is sweet, and makes the Vette sound like a real sports car!
none of the links work... and I can't find any information to validate that nascar is using GT-Plus unleaded. That stuff is actually avalible at the pump from certian Sunoco dealers.
More then likely they are using Sunoco Supreme Leaded - 112 octane. This is for the cup cars. They could be using the GT-Plus in the Busch and weekend series cars as a method of keeping speeds down.
I would install a high-flow center cat. It will also make the car quieter. You can also do dual bullet cats, with a nice Xpipe.
Andy, actually thats exactly whats going to happen - putting a new hi-flow (Magnaflow) main cat back in when the rest of my mess gets fixed starting in the next couple weeks. I'm hoping it will help with the pinging, along with a re-tune (2nd pass) of the chip once I get in on a dyno and get the .BIN data for evaluation. I need to lay on it well past 3500 RPMs.
The added bonus is having my hearing back again......having zero cats, long tube headers, and a modified engine isn't very much fun on the highway. I can barely hear Led Zeppelin blasting 9/10ths of the way up on the Blose with all the loud racket going on out the rear

Its not going to cause any problems with the O2 to remove the main cat. If you put the O2 downstream further, then yes it will. It shouldnt cause problems with anything as far as the running of the engine, its going to run better. Power should be up by at least 10-15 from removing the main cat entirely, our cats are extremely restrictive on the L98, thats not the case on LT1. EGR is not necessary either, not for proper engine function, you just have to delete the Code 32 from the chip. Detonation can occur when its deleted entirely because it helps that when the engine is hot, but you can correct for that in other ways and not have burnt gases reinjected into your engine, which is really why I dont like EGR.
I would install the new main cat, which is what i'm going to do very soon when my headers go on. The new cats today flow 10x better than the 86's cats and the cat will reduce resonance, so I dont see a huge performance loss coming.
