No, not unless you go way overboard. Is this all you're buying a programmer for? If so, save your money and get a B&M Shift Plus for $30 or so. Wires into the PCM harness w/ 2 wires and you can adjust firmness at will with a switch.

i used the hypertech tuner for shift firmness on my 95 vette and after about 3000 miles and alot of performance driving , i lost my 3-4 shift totally. well i had to get the new 3-4 clutch pack (heavy duty with the 9 pads) and instead of using hypertech i got the transgo high performance shift reprogramming kit , new EPC pressure solinoid, and tranny pressure riser kit, and now i have a stronger transmission and. . . . . . . i get a real kick in the pants on the 1-2 shift and a necksnaping 2-3 shift that you just have to feel to believe. So if the hypertech causes you to lose your 2-3 and 3-4 , i guess you'll be looking for this post in a hurry .

A firmer shift extends transmission life by reducing friction and so heat. If you lost your 3-4, it was going to happen anyway. A shift kit is fine but both methods increase shift pressures and the tranny doesn't know or care how it was accomplished, mechanically or electronically.

No,I bought it because I changed gear ratio so I need to correct speedo and shiftpoints.
