Default Questions about Pulling the Engine

I'm about to yank the engine on the 95 and have a question for those that have done this: Did you drop the transmission as the service manual suggests or is it possible to get the engine out without removing the transmission first?

My method is to leave the hood on, support tranny, pull heads. This allows access to the bellhousing bolts. Then the block can be plucked without lowering or removing trans. Sounds like an odd way to do it but works well for me. Exhaust can also stay in place using this method.

it's not so much the heads, as it is the intake. The bell housing bolts can be reached with a swivel socket and long extensions from the bottom.

I normally just support the tranny and use the extensions like bogus said and get the bellhousing bolts from the bottom. This way you can leave the heads, intake and hood all on. For some reasoni always end up pulling the tire off one side to give the cherry picker enough clearance...

Personally, I have always dropped the tranny from below first. Pretty easy to do since you already have to be down there to pull the exhaust/c-beam. I didn't want to worry about the tranny dinging anything on the firewall/tunnel on the way out. But you can probably leave it on as others suggest.

Thanks for the input guys. Did you remove the crank pulley and balancer for more working room up front?

I've got an L98, but I just pulled mine a month ago and did the motor and trans at the same time. I put the chain for the cheery picker on the intake bolts into the heads on the #1 and #8 cylinders (had the intake off of course). I had the hood off though. I had problems getting the exhaust to clear the motor mounts so I undid it from the header/manifold (it was actually the joint that kept hanging. It was much fighting before that but once that was done it came out very smoothly
