Default Seeping problem???LT4 heads???

Can someone tell me which bolt holes in the heads are wet holes?? I am having a seeping problem with the new motor. And also, can I just pull one head bolt at a time, add sealer and retorque or do I have to pull the heads???

thanks,

jeff

what is seeping? oil or coolant?

If it's oil, you do have a problem, cause the oil shouldn't do that.

I would be more concerned that the heads or block are not square.

hm. that's not good.

I would not be inclined to remove a bolt and retorque. Something about that just sounds scary.

I think all the lower bolts are exposed to the cooling journals.

Let's see what the engine builder types say. I would be curious, too.

Speaking for the LT1, all the head bolts are 'wet'. I can't imagine the General would make a big change in that area. If those are torque to yield bolts, I'd give it some thought about their reuse. This may not be the time to cheapen the job.

They are not all wet, but most of them are. I just use the ARP sealer on all of them so they're consistent. At this point, you have nothing to lose, it sounds like. With the engine stone cold, remove them one at a time, in sequence, clean and seal and torque back per ARP's instructions. If you do end up pulling the heads, you can NEVER reuse head gaskets.

I say pull them one at a time and use a thread sealer on each of them. Also make sure to drain the coolant from the car before you start pulling bolts and use an air gun to blow the water off the threads of the bolts and holes. I prefer Napa formagasket sealer for sealing headbolts and anyother bolt. After you are done, let it sit for 24hrs before you fill it with coolant again.

It sounds like whoever put your engine together didn't use any thread sealant on the head bolt threads during assembly. The lower bolts are all in the water jacket and requires thread sealant such as Permatex Teflon thread sealant or ARP thread sealant. Some time ago Fel-Pro made a product called Bolt Prep. This stuff was a superior thread sealant and worked great. I have no idea as to why it was discontinued but it sure worked good.

I would not chance reusing the head gaskets. Especially if you are removing the head. But if you are not removing the heads and you are only removing one bolt at a time to retorque and to apply thread sealer I would try it. If the heads were torqued properly during assembly and if the only problem was because of the lack of thread sealant I would be inclined to try it. But if the leak was a direct result of an improperly torqued cylinde head, I would not reuse the gasket.

Default late night update

Well....being so paronoid, I started the job tonight of taking it apart and decided to pull the heads back off just to be sure. I would hate to one bolt at a time it and STILL have a problem. So a few more hours of work and a few more gaskets and all will be better
