Need help 94 will not stay running
Need help with a 94 coupe with 38000 miles. The car will start cold and after 15 minutes runs rough and then dies and will not restart. Recent parts changes have been: water pump and thermostat, fuel pump and fuel filter, spark plugs. The fuel has been drained and the system purged twice now and no help. I get no check engine light (bulb is good) and the digi gauge reads 230 and the analogue reads 185 just before it dies. I have not had the OBD II diagnostics done yet. I suspect an opti-spark module but am not sure. Any and all help is appreciated as the car is not driveable as it is now. Thanks.

The problem is the car won't stay running long enough to get to a place to download the codes. Is there something I could use to download them? This is my first time dealing with OBD II. My 89 was easy to download from the port under the dash. All I had to do was count the check engine light flashes and look up the codes.
You can get the codes by shorting out the pins in your connector located under the dash on the right side of the steering column. I don't remember which pins to short, but if you have the manual you can look it up or someone else will post that information. If you don't mind spending a few dollars, you can buy the diagnostic grounding plug kit from Mid America Motorworks.

I have the grounding plug kit. Wasn't sure it would work on this car (not mine). Do you still count the check engine light pulses? Thanks.
As long as you have the kit for your year, you just plug in the grounding plug and any stored codes are displayed as numbers. There are no flashes to count. If you have the booklet that comes with the kit, it will give you all the info you need.
I just had a similar problem with my 89'. Check the codes first, of course, but mine was the ECM. I had experienced the car cutting off while in second gear and finally it would not start at all. However, after driving it home from the shop it has cut off again. We suspect the MAF which was the origin of the code. I'm going to put one on and see if it helps. Good luck.
