Mike,

The car has 115k miles on it, but its been serviced regularly. How do you check the EGR system? I'll try to disconnect the MAP sensor and see if that changes anything. Thanks!

A simple way to check your EGR valve is to disconnect the vacuum line feed from the intake, clean it up a bit, and suck air through it. If it is working properly, you can hear the diaphram in the EGR. Then when you stop sucking air, the diaphram will go to rest position which is closed. It does not require alot of "sucking" or vacuum to open the valve. You should be able to hear this action also. Of course, you do this with the engine off.

"The EGR valve is the big black donut shaped device on the back of the intake manifold. Exhaust gas flows from a tube on the #8 exhaust manifold runner, to the back of the intake manifold. The EGR valve controls how much, if any, exhaust gas it admitted to the intake manifold. The solenoid that activates the vacuum is located on the drivers side of the intake manifold, on a clip near the back. The source of vacuum is a port on the drivers side of the intake manifold, near the middle by the PCV valve."
