Was it an option in '85? The other night I had my door panel off fixing the power door lock and I looked up inside towards the keylock and it looked like a couple of wires coming from it. Anyone know what these are for? I also had the info panel off and one of the windows said 'Security' on it.

I do not believe VATS was an option in 85. I can't swear to it, but I'm pretty confident that it began in 86. Regarding the door's wires that you see, you are probably referring to (security) the stock alarm system that came with the car. Very often, over time this system failed to stop working.
VATS first appeard in 86, the 85 cars had an alarm which is carried over in the 86 and later cars, but it is really a separate animal from the VATS system which just disables the starter and fuel delivery if the wrong key is used in the ignition. VATS does not sound any alarms.
Does anyone have any more information about the stock alarm in an 85? Mine isn't working and I thought it might be worth getting to work.
I don't know the name of the part, but the alarm in that car normally failed due to the same part failing as in all the cars. Ecklers, Mid America sells the replacement part, but it is expensive. If I remember correctly, it's around $100-$125. I'd put an after market alarm in. It won't cost that much more, you'll have something up to date and functional. And if you get that part from Ecklers or Mid America, it's not guaranteed to correct the problem.
The alarm in the mid 80's Vette's are notorious for failing. Their failure rates are extremely high. If you don't care too much about keeping it stock, forget about it and put in a new alarm system.
