Default coolant bypass????

what exactly does a coolant bypass entail??? is that something i can do on my 88 l98??? i live in a pretty climate controlled place, so cold temperatures arent an issue.

Coolant bypass doesn't really help anything. I'm not even sure it applies to L98's. I know on LT1's there is coolant routed through the throttle body. Coolant bypass just takes the throttle body out of the coolant loop... bypasses it so coolant no longer flows through it.

Exactly! I know with the coolant flowing through it, the TB is heated, (the metal itself), but to me, the flow of air is so great and fast, that the heat exchange from the metal of the TB to the intake air seems almost impossible, it (the air) doesn't have enough time to absorb the heat from the TB! Coolant bypass: a barb fitting connector, and two hose clamps, wowee!

the loop is an issue that... well lets say here on the forum. Same as MAFS screens. Do some reading and you make the choice.

I say leave it alone. If it's not broke don't fix it......

first lets look at the differnce in air temperature..warm air molecules are spread further apart, cold air closer together(denser)..how is power affected with the same amount of fuel? well. less air, less power, less combustion pressures. more air, more power, more combustion pressure.

wow.... ...using a 195* tstat and doing the TB bypass, the temperature of the TB intake is some 25* +/- 5-8*lower that the intake manifold..so the end result is, less heat transfer/conduction of the incoming air. more cooler air entering the system which in turn yields higher combustion force. just my opion

Disconnect the hoses on either side of the TB and either mate them together with a pipe and 2 clamps, or get some 5/8 heater hose and run one big hose like I did.

Yep.. That's what I did. Figured it couldn't hurt and would probably add up to something on top of all the other mods I have done or plan to do.

absolutely...
this mod was done before but I'm in the last stages of motor rebuild.. i removed all the hoses, built aluminium tee fitting for that 1/4" line to rear manifold and rerouted 3/4" line direct in WP and 5/8" to intake manifold ..

PS: ..not exactly riveting power/hp increase, but noticable difference in fuel mileage .

Note that one coolant hose goes into the TB and one comes from the TB and runs back to the heater.

Buy a U formed piece of heater hose, a plastic hose splice, two hose clamps and two large vacuum nipples.

Remove the short hose that goes into the TB, cut the new U piece of hose so that it plugs into the fitting and goes up under the TPS and down behind the AC compressor. Remove the heater hose from the TB and cut it so that it mates up with the U hose. Splice the two hoses together. Press the two vacuum nipples onto the TB fittings and you are done.

I noticed no difference whatsoever. science says it'll help a little bit, but the biggest effect is cleaning up your engine bay.

I routed my bypass hose under the a/c.

I've always wondered what would happen if you routed icewater through the tb in the summertime when racing. Probably wouldn't help much but it wouldn't be hard to try

If you ever want to take your throttle body off you won't have to fool with the coolant hoses. I think i read on a thread where you could replace the top radiator hose with a '96 because it doesn't have the T-splice and on the heater side just cut it short, plug it off , and point it down and out of sight.

IMHO, the biggest benefit is not having to mess with coolant lines when I need to remove my TB. Since I live in Texas, I am not worried about TB freezeup.

I noticed that when the engines hot it's hot. I also did it for engine cleanup and ease of TB removal. I went as far as totaly removing the coolant passage and barbs from TB Theres no turning back now
