I pulled my motor out of my 89 last fall and I pulled the 6speed first then the engine and left the hood on the motor will come straight up then!
I think almost anyo one will tell you dont take the hood off...
its a huge PITA to align and put back on!
disconnect the tranny and pull the engine.
some people even have to take headers out to pull engine...just go really slow and be careful!

Yes the headers come off before you pull engine I just put them on for the picture
You also need to remove the bellhousing and the distributor so the engine can tip back some it makes removing the bellhousing much easier then the motor will come almost straight up with a cherry picker
You can control how far the engine tips by placing a floorjack with wood block under the oil pan it is also easier unhooking things by removing the front wheels!

it's pretty easy to pull the tranny it's nice if you've got two people. The motor will come out and clear the hood no problem you don't even need to touch the radiator - there are some good threads on this everyone does it differently.

With an auto trans. you can just unbolt the tranny from the engine and unbolt the converter from the flywheel and leave the tranny in the car with some type of blocking under the tranny and still pull the motor with out removing the hood!
Removing, storing, reinstalling and aligning hood is much more difficult than pulling trans. If motor is coming apart anyway, pull heads off while it is still in the car. The tranny bellhousing bolts are then easily accessable. Trans can stay in using this method. Sounds like alot of work using my method but it really makes things easier. This again,is assuming the motor is coming apart.
