Default Service soon light, constantly on.

About three weeks ago I had my service soon light come on. I looked it the manual and it said I should try retightenning the fuel cap, check for irregular fuel, and see if any of the electronics were wet. I did all that and about forty miles later it turned off. A few days ago it turned back on and I did what I did before, however this time I put a new gas cap on. I have put about 60 miles on the car and it is still on. If there any way to tell specifically what is causing it to go off? I am nervous about going to a dealer because it is usually followed by something like your o2 sensorys need replacing, new cats and so on. Any ideas on what causes this to turn on if I have to take it in?
Thanks for the help.

Stop at autozone and they will read the error codes out free.
Then you'll know.

Don't buy anything, just get the codes and post them here on the Forum, you'll get much better advice on how to proceed.

Your SES light comes on, and your manual says to "retighten your gas cap" ? You are kidding right?!!

Did the manual also say to put more air in the tires? hehe j/k

Don't laugh; just 2 weeks I was driving my truck to an appointment when the SES light came on. After my appointment, it was still on so I stopped by the Chevey dealer (it was on the way) and had a tech do a quick scann -- it showed 'a small vaccuum leak in sys'. Checked and retightened my gas cap and reset the codes. Told me to make sure the cap clicks at least 3 times (which I normally do) and if the light comes back on, come back in. Light's been off ever since.

Thanks guys for the quick response. I don't have an autozone anywhere by me. Do you guys know if Pepboys does it. If not I'll stop by the dealer and get any info.
Yes, the retighten gas cap is in the manual, check if you don't believe me.

no, I believe you about the gas cap, i was just kidding! But I wish all Vette problems could be fixed just by re-tightening the gas cap!!

Call Pep Boys, I would think that they have scanner and would read error codes for you for free...You go to dealer,,,,and you'll wait there all day long....unless you are real lucky.....
