A few years back I put on adjustable PowerEffects mufflers, which even in their quietest setting, were much louder and more annoying than stock. I always sort of regretted it.
Later, I added long-tube headers and a 396. Later still, I had to remove the factory resonator to make room for high-flow cats.
At this point the car sounds great, if you don't have to ride in it for more than 10 minutes. It's just too damned loud.
I'd even put the factory mufflers back on at the price of performance, except I didn't keep them.
Can anyone recommend a very quiet muffler that will make the car tolerable for cruising? I'd even be willing to cut the PowerEffects off any swap them for a set of stock mufflers at this point!
do you have an x-pipe? if not, get one. That will do 2 things, one, improve performance by increasing exhaust flow effeciency.
The other, quiet the exhaust down by improving the balance of the power pulses.
As for quiet, check into Corsa. There is a set on Ebay right now. has a bent pipe, but all you want are mufflers... who cares!
The corsa system, when used with stock, is as quiet as it gets.
An aside, a set of high-flow pup-cats might help, too.
Another muffler thought is Mangaflow. Arisa has a similar setup on his 96 LT4. It's not a 396, but his has long tubes, with cats and magnaflow mufflers. It sounds great, but does not seem to be too loud.
I really don't know how much the Corsa mufller helps noise, compared to the rest of their system, so I am ignorant there.

What would you want for the PE mufflers? I'd be very interested when you remove them.
I've heard the Dynomax SuperTurbo mufflers are low restriction AND almost as quiet as stock. In fact, most of the complaints seem to be that they're too quiet. One CF member though said his set started rusting out after two or three years and the supposed limetime warranty turned out not to be worth squat. However, they aren't particularly expensive....
I've tried three difference sets trying to quiet down my exhaust. Running 11.28 CR, TPIS full lengths, gutted CAT and balance pipe.
DynoMax Quiet Flow turbos are about the quietest I've found, but still too loud for my tastes. Thier Super Turbos and Ultra Turbos are louder.
I then plugged the inboard most tip with balled up aluminum foil and difference was like night and day. Exhaust note smoothed out tremendously and made my 3,000+ mile trip last summer a dream.
I can't find a "quiet flow" model at their website. For the '94, I can see only "Super Turbo Muffler" 17690 & 17689. In the 94-91 they also offer an "Ultra Flo".
Was "Quiet Flow" a typo or am I just looking in the wrong place?
From: St. Peters MO Sometimes you have to prove yourself by doing alot of killing or alot of dying...
Flowmaster makes a "hushpower" muffler that is supposed to be quiet... also their delta flow is quiet... the problem is that you have a monster pushing air through those pipes.
I'm pretty happy with my Hooker AeroChambers because I didn't want a loud in your face sound... but I'm also relatively stock with the resonator and factory cats.
The stock exaust is cheap,You put out a call on the form and I am sure someone has an old set of stock exaust they dont want.
I run stock exaust on both my cars.
I installed cut outs if you want the power, just flip a button.
With the cut outs open I make plenty of noise.
Dynomax Ultra Flow's are BAR NONE the quietest performance muffler there is.
A friend of mine has a set of the 3" In/Out ones on his 66 Buick Skylark with a built 455 (runs bottom 11's) and it's quiet as a mouse.

I have found this out recently, im probably going to dump my Power Effects system as well. The Ultra Flo welded is a straight thru design that will flow 1000cfm or better. But they are a kind of ugly.
I like my PE kit, but it doesn't liked to be closed down on my car.

I just put a Dynomax system on my stock 86' and it has a good rumble at idle, and it is what I would call quiet when underway. It does have a resonance issue though and I have the Y tube with the crossover. I am going to try balled up Aluminum foil or a "plumbers plug" in one or two of the exit pipes to see what happens.
