i found a cam that i really want but it is really pricy. i was curious if i gave the specs to crane cams or comp cams if they would custom grind it for me? how much does this usually run? would it be legal since the specs would be the exact same? just curious about options on this one. thanks in advance
All custom cam grinders have a limit as to what they can grind. If they are capable they will grind anything you want and it will be perfectly "legal" because no two cams will every be identical.
Now the problem comes in trying to find something that is out of the ordinary. I want a 220/230 .600/.600 112 with 1.5 rockers. That means .400 lobe lift on a 220 duration. Comp cams didn't tell me that it was "impossible" but they did tell me it would cost $2000 to grind it. I said no thanks.
I'd try and find a private grinder-They are few and far between these days, but they are around. Custom grinds can get expensive-I paid over $600 to Comp for a custom ground SR. Sometimes they'll throw out a high price to scare you off if the profile is too radical (inverted ramps) in fear of you breaking parts and holding them liable. Or could just be greed depending on how you look at it. Good stuff ain't cheap. I can check and see if Camonics cams is still around out here if you like. He's an od timer who has been making one off grinds for many years...
if you need a comp cams custom camshaft check these people out. I had them do a custom one that wasn't on their web page and it was the same $249 price.
I have something very similar to this from comp cams that only cost $249. It is a 224/230 .605/.622 w/113 lsa with 1.6 rockers. My 383 is making 415/417 to the rear wheels with this cam and it is very streetable.
Not sure why the Hard on for 1.5s. 1.6 is usually more efficent. Nascar is using 2.0+ now. you do not have to move the lifter as much saving over all movement of the heavy parts(lifter and push rod)
I order custom grinds off lobe lists and they cost around $350 shipped for the most expensive so far
