I need to replace my shocks and I'm looking at the KYB's. HAs anyone used these and if so, how are they. I want to get a little better shock than stock. I am a spirited driver at times but also do allot of long range cruises. I am also looking at the KONI's but they are a little pricey.
The KYB were on my '88 when I got the car 5yrs ago and I'm quite satisfied with them.
To enhance your spririted driving through twisties, install ES poly graphite sway bar bushings front & rear. They will have no effect on ride quality but greatly enhance flatness in turns.
I replaced my blistiens with KYB and there not bad shocks butt they dont absorb bumps in the road nearly as good as Blistiens did. I was hoping for a softer ride. Like the other guy said, "you get what you pay for".
I replaced the Z52 Bilsteins with KYB's and a lot of my interior squeaks disappeared. I doubt if they would be considered high performance but the ride is smoother.

You mention some qualifications that sort of oppose each other. My experience has been that between the KYBs and the Bilsteins, the stock Bilsteins are the better shock. The Koni's are better yet, but have their drawbacks depending on your driving style.
I've had Koni Sports, KYBs, and Bilsteins, all on my 88 Z51 and I prefer the Z51 Bilsteins. Koni offered both a red replacement and a yellow Sport version. I felt that the yellow Sport version was too harsh for daily driving in town. Great on the twisties, but even the softest setting is considerably stiffer than stock. The Koni shocks are definately superior to the factory shock in build quality. If I was going with Koni for a daily driver, I'd consider the red stock replacement version.
Feeling every bump in the road caused me to try replacing my Koni Sports with new KYBs. With the KYBs my car rode like a caddy. Notable improvement in town and on bad city roads. Excellent for "long range cruises". They were a very good shock at the price. However... having gotten used to the Koni's superb handling during "spirited driving", I found the KYBs a bit sloppy in the turns.
New Z51 Bilsteins seem to me to be the best balance of ride quality and handling. They just seem to be "matched" to the dynamics of the car. Not quite as soft as the KYBs in town, but a lot softer than the Koni Sports with nearly the same handling in the turns as the Koni.
