Default Opti spark install

When installing the opti spark is there a right or wrong way to install it? Can you install it wrong? This is a 96 with a lt4. I am aware of how it fits into the cam but my question is is there more than 1 way to do it?

on the back of the opti, there is square groove that is pretty deep (not round, not hour glass, or any other shape that might be back there. Make sure the cam pin goes into the square groove...good luck!

It can be installed into the wrong hole. If it is the car will backfire and not start. Don't ask me how I know

the square groove that Brand-X is refering to can be seen in this pic and is labled "index groove" . This is what will keep you out of trouble....just turn the shaft on opti to mate up with the position on front of timing cover....

Rich is right. One way to avoid this is by making sure the Opti is *FULLY* seated against the timing cover by hand at all three bolt locations (i.e. it should sit flush all the way around, not have one bolt boss seated and the other two not seated). If you simply get it close and then use the bolts to seat the Opti, the bolts will in fact rather easily snug it up to the timing cover, even if you have the cam pin aligned to the incorrect slot.

my 92 is a little different. If it's not all the way on - then it's not on...

Two other things we did on my last opti install was to loctite the rotor screws inside and add washers to the cover bolts to add alittle more space.

Firmly believe banging against the cover caused the screws to come loose inside which caused the rotor to break up and take out the opti sensor as well. Even with my new Delteq ignition, this caused failure.
