Swapping my 2:59 for 3;54, and I bought an Electronic Ratio Adapter, as part of the group buy from ZIP. My question: What happens to the 2:59 speedo gear in the tranny, does the ERA over ride it, or do I have to go into the tranny and take it out?
I installed the Abbott ERA in my 92 A4 after swapping the 2.59 gears for 3.54's. After putting it in, the speedo works just fine. It's an electronic black box that intercepts the electronic signal sent out by the speedo gears and changes the frequency so as to correct for new gears. It has very fine gradations, so if you ever put in slightly larger or smaller tires, you can easily correct your speedometer. Good luck.
The mechanical gear in the tranny drives a mechanical gear on the speed sensor. The gear spinning in the speed sensor is converted to an electrical signal. And as mentioned the ratio adapter intercepts this signal and converts it so the speedometer is calibrated correctly.
