First I would like to thank everyone on this site. You guys are great. I have had a few issues which without a second thought everyone has been so helpfull. I am no mechanic nor do I try to act like I am and you forum members have helped me out so much in such a short time that I just want to thank you all.
Now for another problem. Driving the car for the first fuel run, my gauge showed a bar over a half, then a half, then under a half with a fuel range of 179 miles. The car then died and couldnt figure the problem so I pulled over to a gas station (by chance) and thought let me put gas and see. Filled it 19.7 gallons. She was bone dry. I saw the tech tip on "fuel gauge Sending unit repair" and was wondering if this could cure my problem? I dont know if I want to jump into it or have one of my mechanics here (Ford dealership) look at it.
My '95 coupe had a similar problem. Full was full, half tank read 3/4 on the meter, and empty read 1/2 on the meter. It was the sender - not a difficult repair.
BUT, check the cost. The sender unit costs the better part of $400! I have seen it as low as $300, but the factory part is usually more.
At that cost, you may want to consider living with it the way it is.

greetings,
i just did this "quick fix" last week and it works fine if done slowly and carefully as in the directions. if your problem is indeed in the sender unit inside the tank, this may very well work as it did in mine. the hardest part was extracting the pump assembly. with me, it was a small section of a "clip" of sorts that kept catching on the side of the tank. i also hated looking into 18 gallons of gas! ugh!...good luck!
Well I believe it is since I filled up that time I have 89 miles (tripometer) and I am still showing full. So that pretty much confirmed it for me. I plan on doing it next weekend. I have a little knowledge in automotive and the directions seem nice and detailed. So I am looking forward to this. except I am going to try to make sure the tank is near empty, ha ha ha. But hey thanks.

***no!....make sure the tank is as you can get it! it is the fumes that are more flamable then the gas itself. i had a hose near my car as well as a fire extinguisher. i also wet the driveway a bit so as not to build up any static charges........
