Default Dana 36...

Im looking to put about 350-400 horsepower thru mine

What commonly breaks on these and is there anything I can do to beef it up? It's a 3.07 gear

The Dana 36 can handle up to 450hp. The case is usually the weak link.

I am between 430-450 hp with a 3.07 dana 36 rear and I have had no problems with my rear and if I did I would wait until until they blew to correct it. You will not have to worry at 400 hp.

best thing to do is to strengthen it is cryo the ring an pinion... thats really the onlything you can do... that and get a thick gear set.
I can cryo them for $135 if you need... just pm or email me.

if i were you stay with the 3.07s dont go higher...
beace that it jsut gonna cause more tq to be applied to it at launch and thus could break it....
usually the pinion or the ring break.... and they explode like a bomb blow the casing open... but the other internals are salvagable!

I am gonna go with a 3.31 as i have an extra set of 3.07s just incase and I am also going to cryo them as well.
IMHO dont go with 3.54 or 3.73 its too low and its just a risk and waste of $ if they break.

let me know

my motor made 600 ft lbs tq at 3300 on the 150 kit and the rear is still alive. I have 60' 1.55 and try to keep it no faster than that. Blown 96 has been 1.48-49 with his.

Mine is stock with 140K on it. 1985 3.07 gears...but my car is 300 lbs lighter too .

Once again, you can't go to a thick ring gear, just because you think it might be stronger (it isn't). The thick ring gear, gears sets, were made to adapt 3 series ratios onto a 2 series case. This allows the savings of buying the PROPER case for the application. It is a compromise and actually is weaker than the as designed set up.

That solves ONE thick problem. Now if...

just no slicks and no hard hard burn outs!

weight reduction helps alot too!
i think ive dropped a good 250lbs off mine too.
I also think its about keeping a low numerical gear so that not too much of the hp/tq get applied at once on take off....

you do need a series 2 carrier for thick gear sets if you need one... I have will have an extra one. acctually the thicker gears will make it stronger! what usually breaks is the ring or pinion and thus making it thinker improves strength
and then cryoin of top of that = alot stronger.
