I have an 88 Z51 and some days I get that antifreeze smell in the cabin. The windows will fog upto. Usually this means a heater core is leaking. I have seen no sign of a leak on the floor board or by the heater box under the hood. AM i looking in the wrong place on these cars. Should I just deal w/ the annoyance or bite the bullet and pull it. It looks like a lot of work for a hunch. Any Ideas.
No need to Just get the new core and the hose sections and get all the info you can before you dive in. Some guys boast that they've done the job in a few hours. I say, get ready for a multi-evening deal.
Use a Delco part for this job, you don't want to have to do it twice like I did. Although it's much quicker the second time.
To check if it's leaking in the cabin, reach under the passenger dash to where you can feel the end of the carpet. Pull the carpet towards you and feel the carpet backing, most likely it will be wet. Change the core and when you finish that, while you have the passenger seat out, pull the bottom carpet and replace the carpet pad, it will be ruined.

At first, they just leak vapors. Let it go for awhile if you want to observe the waterfall onto the floor of the passengers side, and ruin the carpet.
