Default Electric Water Pump

Summit Racing has an Elec. Water Pump with a 10,000 hr lifespan. This gets my interest. Can someone give me a few ideas about the routing of the belt afterwards. I don't need the A/C Pump or the Smog Pump. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm not sure, but I think E.M. sells a smog pump eliminator kit. Maybe someone will pipe in that knows more.

You don't need a smog pump eliminator on an '84. The water pump is a different subject. I would think you'd want to keep the A/C compressor in play, if for no other reason than to use the existing tensioner. If you don't activate the A/C clutch, it pulls no power. However, with out the water pump, you may have to "start over" in the engineering. I'm afraid this is all I have to offer. Sorry.

I hadn't bothered to go open my hood or drag out the Helms, but from the photo, this looks easy. The large pulley, just right of center, top, (looking at the pic) is the smog pump. The belt runs from the A/C (far left), under the tensioner, to the alternator (far right). It's easy to see why no pump eliminator pulley is needed for the smog pump. The belt comes off the outside of the alternator pulley, to the PS pump. from there, the belt goes straight downward to the crank pulley. It wraps about ~340* around the crank pulley, where it goes straight left back to the A/C. It looks pretty simple to route the belt off the bottom of the crank pulley to the A/C, to eliminate the water pump. The only question is if the belt will get enough "traction" from the greatly reduced crank pulley contact. With no water pump to drive, no smog pump, and he says he doesn't need the A/C, I'm guessing it'll work fine. Duck soup!

"TRACTION" is the key I have tried the above method and the belt slipped too much. Unfortunatly I dont have any pics but what we did on my frieds car was mounted an idler pulley to the left of the original water pump pulley between the crank and a/c allowing the belt to wrap around the crank further and not slip. The air pump can be left off but the belt flops alot and nothing supports the p/s bracket with teh air pump gone. I replaced my air pump with an H shaped bracket and idler to minimize belt deflection.

I still have all my accessories, but I have looked it over and realized a brace would have to be constructed to support the inner end of the alternator bracket. Before you added the idler pulley, did the belt slip with the A/C compressor off? Only driving the alternator and the PS?

If you are going that route don't forget to upgrade your stock 80A alternator at the same time. You might be drawing to much current away from your fuel pump and develop a performance problem.
