There is the static bubble balance that my grandfather used
The dynamic balance that my father used
and the force dynamic balance that I have used ( it may be called other things). I think the equipment is manufactured by Hunter and it adds a sidewall pressure as the tire is rotating to simulatedthe loaded weight on the wheel and tire.
It supposedly gives the most accurate balance.

I don't remember what the process is called but there's one tire shop in the area that has some high-priced machine that first optimizes the tire to the wheel for balance and trueness and then balances it. It's about $20 a wheel but it does a hell of a job. I'm very particular about wheel balance and it satisfied me. I don't think I've ever had smoother running tires.
If you go to the website noted above it will tell you which dealers / businesses use their equipment, so you don't have to call around asking who uses it. I had mine done this way, very happy with the results.

If you have your wheels rebalanced be sure that the shop tech knows how to use the tool correctly and that it has been calibrated recently. Not long after the Hunter first came out I went to one of the best shops in town and had my new tires and wheels balanced. It was not right. After repeated attempts to get it right I went to another shop where they had found out that the original training manuals had been in error concerning calibration. They balanced my wheels properly. Once the docs were updated and the techs properly trained on the new procedure, the machine performed extremely well at the other shop as well.
