Today I am replacing WP and Opti. I am trying to loosen the 3 bolts on crank pully, but the whole engine turns when I try to loosen the bolts. The serpintine is still on because I want to lossen the bolts and turn the engine to loosen the grip of pully to shaft...

Please help!!!
And if you have a M6 car you can use a longer 3/8 extension, stick it through the balancer so that it jams against the engine to hold the balance while you loosen the bolts. Or if you have a A4 car remove the flywheel cover and use a flywheel turning tool to hold the flywheel while you attempt to loosen the balance bolts.
If the car is a stick, have the wife put it in gear and hold the brake. If auto a quich rap, rap, rap with the palm is better than steady pushing on the wrench.

I have an A4, but there must be an easier way, and I don't have a "flywheel turning tool".

I have an A4, can I just put it in gear, emergency brake on. Shouldn't this keep the crank from turning???
Give your wrench a sharp hit with a large hammer, 2.5/3lb will do. The mass of the hammer moving at high velocity should help overcome the grip that the bolts have, and since it is happening quickly, it won't turn the crankshaft.
My 2 cents..

Nope but you can use a large screwdriver to wedge into the flywheel and hold it against the engine block while someone loosens the balancer bolt. Or go to Autozone and get a flywheel turning tool. They are cheap, and will make life a lot easier.
OK guys, new Opti is in, crank balancer back on, wires back on the Opti, and she fires up fine.....just need to put on the new WP and the rest of the stuff...
BLAM! 5 hours work...New Opti and WP installed. PITA, but I am glad I did it. Take a look at my old Opti below. It was drenched in oil, bad seal, and the 2 rubber O-rings on the shaft where gone!!
Car runs fantastic, drove it around for 20 minutes to make sure new T-stat was working, and nothing came flying out of the hood!
Thanks to all on this Forum for the great advice given that this is not a job for the feint of heart, I'm just glad mine is still beating. This job would have taken me an entire weekend had it not been for all you folks out there
