If you buy a cable, is there a program to use use that would act as a "Tech 1" like tha manuals keep referring to? I'm really new to this, and it might be stupid question, but I was just trying to figure this out.
the tech 1 is a gm scanner, thereare numerous ones. Snap on has them as well depending on the year of your car you can use autotap as a scanning logging software there is another called tunercat, and many others. The cost obviously goes with what the scanner does, whether it is interactive or not...
It is imprtant to let us know what year and type your car is we can be more specific in helping you
Sorry, It's a 92 automatic. I know I can't change anything on the chip on a 92, I just wanted something for diagnostics. Not a code reader, but a program you can run like the shop does to diagnose problems. The service manual refers to it as a Tech One.
Actually, you can change a number of things on a 92 that you can't on a 91 and older; but, I'm no expert; however, there are plenty of experts who can help you with a custom chip for your 92.

I think you are looking for something like Datamaster. It gives all the info you need and will record a lot of data. It has some cool features like time to distance calculations. Free for 20 uses. Then its like $120 to register. You need a laptop with a real good battery and a cable and some patients. It took a few trys for me (computer rookie) to get it going. Try AKM cables or ttspowersystems for the download.
