Default rearend curiousity question

What ratio gets the best gas mileage and still performs well. I was talking to a friend of mine about gas prices rising and started thinking about this, my friend thinks 3:50 range, I think in the 3:10 range would be best. Of course neither of us are very much about rearend ratio's.

well, just my $.02 but with an auto car and just for some spirited driving and some drag racing in mind a 3.31 gear is a nice gear. not many people use this gear but its a mid range gear good from highway and some drag racing.

if you have 2.59's you've got the highest or best gear for gas mileage out there. if thats what you want these are a dime a dozon. heck! i have a extra set of 2.59's and a posi in my shed for a vette!there everywhere.

I agree with the 3.31. I had an'87 Pontiac GTA with 3.27 and 700R. With about 375 HP/383, the car ran low 13's (1.86 60-footers) and got 22 mpg on highway. It weighed 200 lbs more than our Corvettes.

I've got 3.54's, I get 30 mpg on the highway (of course, I do have a 6spd), and my '89 is rather quick off the line (at least it feels that way, I haven't had the chance to take it to the strip yet)

I agree a 3.31 is ideal, however, this gear ratio is very hard to find. With an automatic transmission, which is not geared as high as a manual, I would consider a 3.07 as the next best ratio.

I have a 94 auto that came with the 2.59's. Changed out to the 3.54, so as to keep the same carrier. Gas mileage is now averaging 22mpg - down from about 25mpg with the 2.59's in. However, still best mod I have made to date. 3.54's wake up the LT1 in an auto!
