All, the starter on my 91 auto L98 seems to have a flat spot on it and I want to replace it. Sometimes it just "clicks" for few tries, then starts; other times it starts normally. Battery's good and after it starts, it runs great. My questions are: Does this engine have a 153 tooth or 168 tooth flywheel? Is a gear reduction performance starter the way to go, or is OEM ok? The engine's bone stock and there's no major mods in its future - I just enjoy the ride. Thanks in advance.
Joe
I happen to have a starter that just came out of my 85. It had 52K on it and I took it out to go with a high torque unit due to mods. There's nothing wrong with it and it's yours for $35 plus shipping. Send me an email if interested.
Hey Joe,
If you want to get your starter fixed,I highly suggest you get yours rebuilt and not"exchanged" with a core from the parts stores.
I forget the flywheel tooth but its very important to see if your
starter has any shims or not. Many times, when you swap starters with the parts stores, they dont fit right without proper shimming, which is a pain in the azz.Usually its not the same as the one in your car.
Check this out before swapping starters.
Btw,Im a former NewYorker and lived in Westchester county and Fishkill area in the Past.Hope the Vette gets fixed for ya!!
Thanks for all the good feedback, gang. John, I took your advice and ordered a starter from Jegs (w/solenoid and shims: $148 incl. shipping) as I wanted a new unit in the car.
Uh oh. I ordered part #555-10001 - I think it's full size, but has an adjustable mount, weighs 10.5 lbs. Well, maybe it'll take a few extra beers and cigars....!
