Default Cam question

I've decided to do a little freshing up of my motor. It's a stock 86 lL98 with aluminum heads. I've got a set of 1.5 roller tip rockers just waiting to be put in so I've thought about going a little further and installing a new cam. I've looked at the Comp Cams Extreem Energy 12-256-4 which is supposed to be for a computer controlled car. I probably will put headers on as soon as the budget allows but for now I'm looking for a cam that has good street driveablity and good idle. Gotta keep my wife hapy as she enjoys driving it too but would be a little upset if it doesn't run smooth. Anybody running this cam or any suggestions that would meet my needs? Thanks

212/218 should be just fine, but you will need the chip reprogrammed.

Are you talking a performance chip or a custom burn?

It will need a custom burn.

The 256 grind is a very mild cam grind and will satisfy your wife. A custom chip would enhance your cars performance with this cam. While it will run without one, I do recommend a chip to compliment the cam and later the headers.

I also recommend a roller cam if your budget allows. I have one in my 85 and the advantages keep pace with the extra dollars. A custom burn is essential, however no matter what cam you choose as I concur with the previous threads. It's best to take the car somewhere after the cam is installed soon thereafter, because the car will not perform as you expect. The custom burned chip will help smooth out the idle and compensate the proper air/fuel ratio through the RPM ranges. This is very important because the car could burn lean causing internal engine damage. The problem is not everyone has the software for L98 chips. Good luck to you.

There are a lot of modded cars out there that run slower than stock because nobody ever took the time to tune them right.
