Default Changing Cooling Fans

Has anyone changed their fans to higher CFM ones? What did you use? I talked to a couple of people about my 88 running a little on the hot side. Since it cools down when driving, some seem to think that the radiator if fine, It just needs better fans to help cool while in traffic.

Thanks.

Hey blown,

I didn't change my fans , but I went to a 180 thermostat and have programmed the fans to come on earlier. Also I addedsome water wetter, I run around 195 ish in the hot summers here...

Also be sure yourcondenser is not dammed with dirt papers etc. I found mine had a bunch of dirt form going up a relatives dirt driveway after it hd rained and the condenser was packed solid! so the radiator was getting very little air...

I do recall on my 87 they had a auxillary fan on the outside that was used to help push air through... on my 89 with a hypertech chip I changed the fan sensor on the drivers side block as I recall tht was meant for I think a 160 thermostat but it would turn on at like 180 .

I hope this helps,

mo

Thanks MO. I have checked for dirt etc. and it was clear. (you may remenber my other post about swapping radiators) I intend to use the water wetter, and I have put my auxillary fan on a manual switch but it doesn't help all that much in traffic. The guys from TPIS said I should change to a stronger fan.

I have never changed mine, but I've been wondering the same thing. I hear Spall makes the most powerful and efficient fan on the market. Dont have a link, but when I get time I may check it out. What good is a car if you have to worry about hitting traffic and heating up?

I would say a larger radiator would be more beneficial....

My opinion... are you sure the the radiator is clean inside i.e.have you flushed it?

I get in temps up to 106 ambient here and still hold at 210 ..

If you're getting that 240o with the fans on, then definitely something needs to change.

I assume you've flushed the cooling system, checked for anything obstructing the front of the radiator, straightened radiator fins, etc.

If so, then I vote new radiator. Even a new stock radiator would improve cooling over the 17 year old one. If that doesn't help then it's time to look at a higher flow water pump and/or higher flow fans.
