Default Difference between cams for LT1 and non LT1's

I noticed Comp Cams and Corwer put labels that there cams are for LT1/4 specific etc. What is the difference? IS it just the dowel ? Can I use other than LT1/4 cams, as there are better choices out there? Just getting my ducks in a row so I dont choose the wrong kind.
According to Comp Cams it is this.http://www.compcams.com/Technical/Cu...ML/120-123.asp Anyone use different cam than "LT1/4" specific?

The only thing you should be aware of is if dowell pin is long enough to drive the opti and whether or not the front of the cam will accept the shaft from the OPTI. Otherwise it's the same as any other hydraulic roller. Also the LT1/LT4 factory cams wouldn't have needed a provision for a mechanical fuel pump, but if you put one in the block that does it certainly won't hurt anything.

The early 92/94 LT1 engines don't have the long dowel pin. It was only from 95 and up that used the long dowel pin and the .500" ID hole to accept the Opti shaft. 99% of all cams made now have the hole now, at least as far as I know

Make sure the dowel pin is not too long. when we built my nephew's engine, we specified the cam for an LT1 and it came with a long dowel pin....in fact too long. Fortunately i spotted it on assembly, but i know of a similar circumstance where they missed it and had devasting consequences.

Thats right I had a Comp Cam come in that way as well. It was like .750" long and I tried to press it in deeper but it was bottomed out. I had to use a die grinder to cut off the excess. For a custom grind it was a RPITA to have to do that!

I understand the dowel pin. I have a 95 Distributor etc on my 93 motor. The hole in the center Comp Cams is talking about a pilot hole in the center for the distributor drive, correct? Anyone use a Non LT1 cam have any fitment issues. The reason I ask there arent many choices. This article kind of explains it. I have the hot cam in there now, and when I pull the motor I will inspect it. I am sure GM has it set up to accomadate most motors.

Make sure the cam is for a roller block. The only other difference is the pin.

So the center hole should be good for the distributor .
