Hello everybody. I replaced the turn signal lever on my 85, I've been into a bunch of GM columns so this was no big deal until I went back together. How do you hold the telescopic shaft in place and install the locking c-clip?? If anyone has some info or can e-mail me the process from an owners manual that would be great. Thanks
This is a great link with great pics and instructions.
Somewhere in the link or the FSM (which I didn't go into) it says to pull the telescoping shaft up and screw a bolt down the center of the shaft with the same thread as the locking lever bolt. This hold the shaft up and in place while you assemble the upper end. Then, and as probably mentioned, remove the bolt and use a lock plate compression tool (parts store @ $15) to compress the components down into the housing while at the same it up pulls up on the telescoping shaft. The C clip will slide into place now. Remove the compression tool, re-install the temporary bolt, install the wheel and nut. These steps may vary a little since I'm only going by memory.
Put my new wheel on lastnight.
I used the screw/bolt that holds the locking arm for the teliscoping to hold the shoft up. once I got ahold of it I removed the screw and got the bolt started, job done
