Has any ever had clearance issue with hooker headers pn# (2149) and how hard are they to install? I plan on purchasing some or the TPIS header tommorow. 86 Vette
Randy,
from all i've read around here over the past 2 years, the hooker #2149's w/Y pipe has had some fitment issues on automatic trannys. i've heard of no problems with the manual tranny's - and mine were installed on my ZF-6 with almost zero fitment issues, the only one being an extension that had to be fabricated for the alternator bracket.
My hooker headers needed clearancing on the pass side. Had to remove motor mount bolt and shim with washers to pull nut away from tube. Also had to put a small ding in the tube.
No problems with the TPIS headers on my 86 w / manual. Didn't need to remove the starter but did need to go with a remote starter solenoid because of the heat.
The only fitment issue I had with my hooker 2149's was the alternator brace. The little spacer for this that hooker provided doesn't work. I was going to modify it and make it work but never got to it. It seems to be doing fine without it, even with a nitrous shot.
Maybe some fitment issues are due to the installation method. I actually read the instructions that came with mine. They suggest that you fit the headers up to heads and start the bolts but DONT tighten. Then mount the Y pipe and start the collector bolts but DONT tighten. Then go back and tighten the bolts at heads. Then come back and tighten the collectors.
I used this method and didn't have any of the fitment issues I've heard tale of. Nor did I have any tranny clearance trouble with my automatic. Plus with the ceramic coating my starter stays cool as does my underhood temps. I'm not trying to be a hooker pimp/salesman, I could care less what anyone else goes with. I'm just being honest about my experience and feel for the money the ceramic coated hookers are ok. I certainly love the way it sounds and runs with them. Maybe Hooker has made some changes, I dunno, but the ones I bought as of December 04 seem to fit fine with good clearances when installation instructions are followed.

In my experience with Hookers on the Lt-1 ground clearance isn't an issue at all. list of things that are: Alternator braket, plug wire brackets, motor mount bolts (just turn these around)....all of these are easy fixes.
Yeah ground clearance is definetly not a prob. Look at my pics. In order for the headers to drag ground, the oil pan would first have to be bashed in. I didn't have any probs with motor mounts but I forgot to mention the plug wire guide clips. Where they are held by two small bolts each, the hookers flanges party cover one hole. The fix is easy if you have a bench grinder. You just grind away one hole on the clips and make them mono-bolt clips instead of duel. They work fine bolted on with one bolt.
I had some issues with my #2151 Hookers First off the drivers side went on like a charm. I used fel pro gaskets with the red permatex on both sides. The passenger side gave me problems though. I didn't remove the starter which didn't cause any interferance slipping it in from underneath. But I did have to grind a small half round section out of the K member and also trim some of the heat shielding by the Fuel Filter. Number 8 bolt was a @$#!^&*^ to tighten till I ground down an old wrench and tightened it 1/8 th of a turn at a time( took forever) The Y Pipe seemed like it was very close to rubbing the shift cable & bracket and came very close to rubbing the back corner of the trans pan. It's a 90 Automatic and went from a 13.91 to a 13.63 ET through a stock cat convertor and stock mufflers
