I put a set of KYBs on my 91 in October to replace my 89,000 mile Bilstiens. Good shock and a good price. Check with Summit. They usually have the best price.

Default A good value is KYB's

They run $45.00 each and are a great replacement. They come with a limited lifetime warantee. They are available at your favorite parts retailer.

Check with PST (Performance Suspension Technology)

I ran their entire package on my 91TA. Polygraphite bushings, shocks, springs, panhard...blah blah blah. It made that car very competitive in AutoX. Look at them for price.

How do you tell when a shock goes out?

Seems KYBs are best budget shock. If your gonna spend $130 or so a shock then get QA1s, they are awesome. 12 way adjustable, and can be set from soft to stiff as a go-kart. Great for keeping your car nice a smooth on the road, and stiff for Autocross and spirted driving.

If a shock goes (completely, whereby it breaks off), you'll know it. 99.9% of the time, they just wear out. If it breaks, your car will be bouncing like a rubber ball. At least it will be trying to. One side will be fighting the other.

The shocks absorb all the bumps in the road, so you don't feel like you're on a roller coaster. When the shocks wear, and they usually wear evenly, your car will feel a bit "bouncy."

If you stand at the front or rear of your car (to one side or the other) and push down hard on the car, the car should not bounce up and down. If it does, your shocks are shot. The car should come up and stay there. You may not even be able to push down on your car if your shocks are stiff and are in good shape.

I once saw a car driven by a friend (on a closed road), who had taken the shocks out. It was hilarious. He bounced up and down so many times.

This was written for him, not you.
