What's the best way to eliminate the cats on a 1993? Does anyone make a decent X or H pipe to bridge the gap between the headers and the cat-back exhaust (if it matters, I have a Borla system).
Mine just has short pipes that hook up between where the cats would be and the headers. They have a flange welded on the outlet end and hook to the headers on the inlet. This just ensures that if I want I can put the cats back on with ease. Most muffler shops will make a "test pipe" like that for you.
They don't rob power... modern cats are most efficeint. Factory LT1 cats are only robbing about 5hp.
Here is the other part of the equation - cats provide necessary back pressure to allow the exhaust to scavange correctly.
The final part? Air quality. As long as a car is used on the highway, I will support the use of cats and EGR to keep emissions down. (note on the EGR, modern engines don't use it thanks to different cam overlaps and better computer controls)
I am a realist - precats and airpumps are a waste of space... If I could, I would ditch both off of bastet44's 87 coupe. But the main cat and the EGR are what really matter to air quality.
Headers only eliminate the factory cats. They are so big, they won't move down the car without bumping things. I would suggest bullet cats from Magnaflow (CarSound) or Random Technologies. Either way, they are about $140.00 each or so.
Is this car going to be a dedicated track car? If so, then you won't need them, and you can ignore my rantings.

So what do you do? Slip the cats back on every 2 years for emissions?
