I walked out a week ago, to find my windshield cracked in half ('92 Coupe). I had a chip, water got in, freezing weather, crack!
So, luckily my insurance has no deductable on glass, and I have the glass people coming tomorrow to replace the windshield.
1) Is there anything I should watch out for? I want to make sure the guy does a good job.
2) What weatherstripping will they have to replace? Just the sealant behind the windshield, or the pillar/across the top weatherstripping as well (please???)
Make sure you get original GM weatherstripping, they have to replace all of it around the windshield if you want it done right without leaks. Also make sure they get you PPG or LOF glass, dont get any of the aftermarket stuff, its junk. Safelite did mine a few weeks ago they did a really crappy job. The guy that installed it was a "corvette expert" that had been installing windshields in corvettes for 30 years. I wish I had the pics to show how bad the job was... the metal seals around the window had a 1/4 gap between them and the windsheld, also where the seals line up in the corners where the targa top meets were off by 1/2 inch. The gap causes bugs and junk to get stuck in there and its impossibe to remove. I had them come back to fix it and it looks little better but theres still a gap. It looked like a 4 year old did the job.. and I get wind noise now at highway speeds.
Take pictures before they install the windshield so if/when they screw it up and they say its supposed to look like that you can show them the before pics. Make sure they guarantee the work and ask them if they can make the install look just like it is now.
It is possible to replace the windshield without destroying the weatherstrip. If they know where the screws are, they can separate the weatherstip from the retainer enough remove the screws and take out the weatherstrip and the retainer as a unit.
Safelite are ******, they do everything cheap, and lousy glass at that. to say I am unhappy is an understatement. I cant afford 700 more dollars for another. They put 2 different windshields as the first was flawed, replaced for free, second is bubbled on top, looks terrible. They would replace that one, and there main office was not cool, all they wanted me to do was get another windhield at my place I wanted and then return there glass and they would refund me. Well, I was unable to do it. I wish I had , but I had no oppurtunities to.
Broke your glasses while changing the fuel filter, hit a deer, trying to get a paint job for the last 2 years, crack winshield... You have got to get out of Trenton, NJ

Yeah.. it has been a time for this car. However, I did get the new paint job, and I needed new glasses anyway..
It was safelite that I was going with. The guys came out, took one look at it, and told me it would probably be best if I went to a dealership to have it done. They also said that I could bring it into their shop, and they would order in the OEM glass and weather strip. Since I have no deductable, and it is covered by insurance, I am thinking I am just going to bring it back to the dealership.
Got mine done for $160 installed. Thought I had gotten a great deal, until it started leaking. Now it leaks terribly and stupid GlassMasters wont fix it. When I wash the car, I have to dry the inside of the car too! Live and learn.
