Wish me luck. We're going to have the diff shop try one more time. We are taking out the Richmond's which we could never make quiet.
We're installing new Super Dana 44 3.73s and new rear diff oil. Do any of you have the Spicer Dana 44 3.73s ? Do you have much gear noise?
Talk to Kenny at Tom's Differentials. He has been been doing almost nothing but these rearends (Corvettes) for over 20+ years with much success. The phone # is (562) 634-8431. If he can't help........

I have only installed one set of gears that were other than DANA gears. But they were quiet as well. The last set I did was a set of 4.10s that were originally Viper gears but these were also made by DANA and were quiet as well. Certain Richmond gears are a little noisey and its not just with D44 or D36 pumpkins. I have had this problem with other GM axles such as the F body 10 bolts. However I was always forwarned about the problem and advised the customer well before the installation takes place. Its cover your azz in these cases as no one wants to do the job over for free.
Assumming bearing preload, pinion depth is ok. Pinion bearing preload is crucial, any play or questional bearings can cause noise. Also Some of us old timers have been known to set the backlash as much as .020"-.022" this can help quiet things down. .006-.009" is pretty tight especially if the carrier has runnout. If you have .006 backlash and .003 runnout [which should be acceptable] you could be as tight as .003 in spots around the ring gear. Gears are usually noisey from being too tight.
Look up Randy's Ring and Pinion on Google and give them a call... they know exactly what to get you. You will also want to get the install kit for another $100 or so (shims, bearings, etc)
