There is a couple ways to do it. I didn't remove the hood and chose to remove it from the side. The bad thing about doing it this way is that you have to remove the transmission in order to lift the motor straight up from the side. This is because you have no room to move the engine forward because I also didn't remove the radiator. There isn't adequate space to move the engine forward enough to clear the clutch if you leave the transmission in place.

The second way is to remove the hood, and radiator so that you can pull the engine forward and out. Then you can support the transmission with a floor jack and remove the engine without removing the transmission.

Otherwise its about the same as removing an engine from anything else.

I've removed an L98 with an auto tranny. If your LT1 is an auto, it is pretty much the same difficulty. Some tips-

1) get a friend to help you. Having another set of hands, and some company, makes the job quite a bit easier.

2) Get that friend to be the one to remove the bell housing bolts. On the Auto trannys, this is a SOB of a job! (ask me how I know!! You're welcome Viet!! )

3) Do it in a garage. Its no fun pulling a motor out of a car on a slanted driveway (ask me how I know!)

Other than that, just take your time, and be careful.

Hey Steve40th, how much of the engine did you disassemble? Did you remove the AC compressor from engine and lay to the side or break the lines? Did you pull it with the heads and intake still on the engine? If so, where did you attach the lifting chain? And one more while I'm at it, my car is an automatic, is yours and did you leave it in place? Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!!

Do
Leave the hood on
Make a detailed list and take pics
Leave the AC lines on and set the comp to the side
Take your time

Don't

Pull the trany unless you just like extra work.
(I have seen many who pull the trany and there is no reason. The motor will come right out with the trany in place.)
Here is a pic of my 95 with the motor just pulled, and yes the radiator is still in the car. I have done this again since the pics for the stroker.

Here is my second motor going in

TJ I almost always agree with you but the motor will come out fairly easy with the trany in place and the hood on. I have done it three times with a 6 speed car and never had a bit of trouble.

Take your time and ZIP LOCK all the bolts and take the time to mark where they came from .
If you mark all the bolts it will cut the reasembly time in half.
Tape the wire conectors to the body and the engine wiring engine.
Use a felt pen every chance to mark where vacume hosego with masking tape.

with everything he said.... If you still have factory cats and their accomanying brackets, they may be a bitch due to rusty bolts and poor access. If you can't get to all the bellhousing bolts, remove the C beam and driveshaft, then lower the rear of the trans a little. There are also some ground wires hooked onto the left side, I believe the center, bellhousing bolt. This is the most grief you should run into. Remove the damper from the front of the crank (the hub can stay in place) and you'll have all the room you need to come forward.

Get yourself an engine load leveler and take the motor and trans out at the same time..Your hood will need to be off obviously.. you can put it in the same way as you took it out with the load leveller..It's the best tool out there and made my job super simple. Once everything was unbolted and transmission free from the driveshaft and H-beam, it all came out very easily - I have pictures if your interested...
