I am replacing the shift shaft seal on my 96 for the 2nd time in 68K miles. I need to find out which direction it goes in. The choices are:
1- Metal side of the seal outer ring towards the transmission case with the inner seal taper (around the shaft) pointing out (Goes on the easiest but seems like it would leak)
2- Rubber side of the seal outer ring towards the case with the inner seal taper pointing towards the inside of the case (harder to get on but that is how the seal came off this time and I believe the last time as well.
Metal side goes out. Tap it in with a socket. Little bit of rtv on outside edge of seal where it touches metal. These almost never leak. Inspect shaft for grooves or burrs. Polish out or change if nescessary.
