I just replaced the TPS sensor on my 92. Now, I have a high idle and the check engine and service asr lights are on. Is there any way to adjust the sensor or is it suppose to automaticly reset it's self when the car is idling. Any ideas?
first check which codes you have. you may have replaced with a bad sensor.
anyway, for the engine control, the TPS is self adjusting. try this to reset the idle control. this is what i do on my 92:
- remove battery power for a minute (is not absolutely necessary but resets the ECM "memory" completely).
- with gas pedal slightly depressed, start car up, and let RPM's hang at around 3000RPM for about 5-10 seconds. let go of the gas and let it settle down for 10 seconds to idle.
- shut down engine and keep it off for 10 seconds.
- restart and confirm normal idle operation.
as for the ASR, it needs to learn the new TPS via a GM diagnostic tool. you can get that done at a dealer.
Thanks for the info, tempest. I just checked my codes and got a 22, which I believe is a faulty TPS code. I will probably go ahead and replace the sensor again to see what that does. Isn't there a tool available that can test the tps sensor.

YES! A volt meter. Make sure the voltage goes up steadily and smoothly as you move the throttle lever from idle to WOT. That's about all there is to it.

RACE ON!!!
to get to the wire cores, i used needles jammed into the connector where the wire enters. i then touched the voltmeter to the needles. use the sensor's ground in the connector (instead of some random place on the engine) for the reading.
code 22 is a TPS low voltage error. it triggers when the voltage is below 0.23 volts. in idle it should read around 0.6V, but can range from 0.3~0.9V.
if it is not the sensor, check the wire harness for breaks and also see if any connector pins look broken.

This brings to mind another possibility. I have never installed a non-adjustable TPS, but on my car, one has to take care to be sure that the tab on the TB that moves the TPS is properly engaged in the sensor. If it weren't, the TPS voltage wouldn't match up with what the ECM was expecting to see, once you raised the rpms above idle, and set the "low voltage" code.
I replaced the TPS on my 92 last week and posted my troubleshooting steps along the way (link is below). In addition to the throttle position sensor, there is also a TPS/ASR module located near the windshield fluid reservoir that is tied in to the mix. So if you throw another TPS at the problem and still get a code 22 set, you may take a look at that. Hope this helps.
