Default Engine Offset in Car

I am in the process of building yet another intercooler for my street car. In the process of designing the new IC, I have noted that the engine intake is exactly 1" offset to the passenger side of the car. When taking measurements, it appears that the whole engine is offset to the R side of the car. Has anyone else noted this?

As a side for those interested, the core is 22"W x 15"H x 5"D, with single 3.o" oval bottom feed and 3.5" oval top discharge. I am in the process of drawing it on ACAD, and it should be complete within a few weeks.

Thanks,
Aaron

You are absolutely right!!! When I built my intercooler I put the outlet to the manifold exactly in the middle.. it looks ok, but is definately cocked just a bit.. one inch towards the passenger side would have lined it up perfectly...good catch!!

yup yup.. it is done to offset the weight of the battery to the far drivers side of the car for more accurate weight distribution I would guess, anyone else agree or have other speculations on why GM would do this? the rear end seems to be in the middle, so the drive shaft must be angled as well. a 5" thick core.. thats a monster.. oughtta flow pretty well!

I am using a 12" x 4" x 24" L side inlets outlets with the inlet and outlet on the sides of the radiator shroud under the frame rails and bending underneath the headlights. relocated the overflow tank to the windshield wiper fluid resevoir and am removing the wipers and gonna keep a small bottle of rainX in the car.. somethign I used to do with mustangs.. hated the wipers on those cars.. seems like everyone was doing it back in the day... anyways, will post osme pics with it sitting where im gonna mount it when i get there.. should be finishign up the hotside stuff this week! waiting on a T4 flange right now.

From my early engineering days at Mercury Marine in Stillwater, I do recall one of the GM/Lotus engineers telling me it was offset to give the driver more leg room, or for better pedal spacing, or something like that.

I recall someone saying that it was for foot clearance for the manual cars. Anyways, just thought it was an interesting fact.

The IC design was completed in ACAD on Monday PM and transferred to the fab shop. The core actually wound up as 22"W x 6"D x 15"H. Due to the 15" height, it is a custom core, which requires 3 weeks delivery from the core manufacturer. Therefore, I am looking at ~end of April prior to receipt. I will be re-installing the old IC this weekend, so the car can be driven regularly again.

One item I did do different on this design is step to 3.5" ID oval discharge and 3" oval ID inlet vs the previous 2.5" ID inlet and 3" discharge.

All of my piping that was 2.5 inlet and 3" exit will be replaced with 3" oval and 3.5" oval respectively. A single 3.5" x 4.5" bell is all that is required to go to the monoblade. The max race B/O valve will remain on the piping between the head unit and the IC inlet.

I will take some pics along the way, and will need some assistance in posting. But that is nearly a month away.

I noticed that the motor was shifted over towards the passengers side too. I found that out when I temporarliy tried to use a mechanical fuel pump.

yep I found this out when I cut the hole right in the center for the carb and filter but was off center.... I found that pretty interesting and thought they did that to give the car lateral balance w/ an average size driver in the car...

BTW: DONT LOOK AT MY SIG PIC AND TELL ME TO GO IN THE C5 FORUM... I also have a built C4 for drag racing....

All are welcome in the C4 FI forum. Actually, we could use some more attendance in the C4 section, much like the C5 section. I post over there as well, as I know a few of the guys, and have done a couple of installs on the C5s as well.

The cores (22"W x 15"H x 6"D) are supposed to be in to the fab shop the 3rd week of April. The ACAD design has been complete. I am supposed to be getting pics of the end tanks sometime next week. The end tank to core fabrication is supposed to be complete w/in 3 days of receipt of cores. It will probably take a week to get the complete unit delivered to Houston. I will have some pics for the forum at that time.

A couple of questions as I am completing the much simplified piping. Has anyone welded a bend (90°, 60°, 45°) on the discharge of their blower, as invariably all of the ATI units require a pretty healthy bend (conflict with the TB)? I am contemplating the addition of a 45 or 30° angle on the discharge of the D1R. Additionally, where is the best place that any of you have found to purchase oval tubing. I am looking for 3" (blower to IC) and would prefer not to have to manually "squish" round tubing. The IC discharge though 3.5" requires no tubing; just a simple silicone bell from 3.5" oval to 4.5" oval on the TB.

Any help is appreciated.

Bruce,
I am ready to take you up on your offer. The cores were received on Wednesday. The metal was cut on Thursday, and everything has been tacked into place today. The unit should be finished by Monday. I will send some pics to your attention if you would not mind hosting them up.

Thanks in advance,
Aaron

the motors are offset for weight distribution, they have been like that for a long time. i put a 427 with a blower in a 68 vette and had to measure a dozen times before i could cut the hole off to the right side. there will always be a driver weighing an avrage of 150-175 lb, but there is no guarantee of a passanger to counter balance that weight.

I thought the offset was to allow for a bigger turbo!!!
