Unless you have a specific reason to remove it, I'd just leave it. I know nobody likes them but at times they actually reduce knock for daily drivers. Just my thoughts.
I disabled my egr on the chip (1990) and one problem it caused was at light cruise throttle the o2 sensor would go dead rich and set a code (rich). If you varied the throttle just ever so slightly it would go away and the o2 sensor started swinging rich/lean again like it should.
Reinstalling the egr on the chip corrected the problem and I notice no difference in performance, I am sure there is some H.P. loss when egr is on but while using a scanner and watching egr it really isn't on to much. Also when you hit the gas it is not commanded on either.
If you change camshafts and get one with a built in egr overlap then there would be no need for the egr valve.
