You can buy H/W & S/W for a lap top but I use an AutoXray.
This unit is very compact and is easy to use while making a 1/4 mile pass. It has the capability to scan ECM parameters & op codes as well as a monitor mode which allows the capture of ECM parmeters over a period of 30sec.
Mine is about 5yrs old and does not have facility to upload to my PC, but the new units have this convenience.
Price of the unit was around $200 and I believe the carrying case was extra.

Do a Yahoo scan for Auto Xray and you will find plenty more.
You need a scanner for GM OBD-I cars. It's about $200 & case is $20 from Auto Xray.
HW is hardware, such as the cable to connect the lap top serial port to the ALDL connector in your Vette.
SW is software, like Diacom, running on your lap top to communicate with the ECM.

I picked up an AutXray EZ Scan 300 for $200 bucks at ebay. There's a vendon there that has them on auction, but he also has a website, and he will sell it direct. If your interested, send me an email @ joe3906@optonline.net and I'll give you all the information.
