Putting new Bilsteins on, the new bushings are like an inch thick and the existing ones are maybe 1/4 inch. Granted they have worn, but I don't think I can compress these new ones half that much. Is there a torque spec? I checked the Bilstein documentation and they just mention checking the bolts/nuts after the first few miles of driving.
Standard procedure is to tighten the nuts down until the rubber donuts expand to approximately the same diameter as the steel washers.

I do the same as Larry, but a little bit more. If I recall correctly Bil has a picture in the install directions of the rubber bulging just a little bit out past the washer diameter. Either should be fine. Don't use a torque measurement for this part of the install.
If you wish, double nut or use a drop of loctite (not the permanent) on the nut.
Thanks for the information guys. The originals have the bushing pretty much even with the edge of the washer. I'll install the same way and check the TQ on the remainder of the nuts/bolts.
